Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and rewarding wildlife destinations, located just a few hours’ drive west of Dar es Salaam. As part of the greater Selous ecosystem, Mikumi offers excellent game viewing in open landscapes that make wildlife easy to spot earning it a reputation as a “mini-Serengeti” of southern Tanzania.
Its convenience, diversity, and reliable sightings make Mikumi an ideal choice for short safaris, fly-in trips, and combined itineraries with other southern parks.
Mikumi’s heart is the Mkata Floodplain, a broad sweep of grassland framed by distant hills and dotted with iconic acacia trees. This open terrain allows for exceptional visibility and classic safari photography, particularly during the dry season.
Mikumi supports a rich variety of wildlife, including:
Large herds of elephant, buffalo, and zebra
Giraffe, wildebeest, eland, and impala
Predators such as lion, leopard, and spotted hyena
One of Tanzania’s most reliable places to see lion basking on termite mounds
The park is also home to over 400 bird species, making it a rewarding destination for bird enthusiasts.
Wildlife viewing is strongest during the dry season (June–October), when animals concentrate around water sources and vegetation is sparse. The green season (November–May) brings lush landscapes, fewer visitors, and excellent birdlife.
Easy road access from Dar es Salaam
Excellent wildlife density for a short safari
Ideal for first-time safari travelers
Works perfectly in combination with Ruaha or Nyerere National Park
Mikumi National Park delivers a classic African safari experience without the crowds or long travel times making it one of southern Tanzania’s most practical and rewarding parks.
