Itinerary Overview

Embarking on the Rongai route for your Kilimanjaro ascent offers a unique and potentially less crowded experience. This itinerary outlines a climb utilizing the Saddle Hut, providing a comfortable and strategic acclimatization point. Here's a day-by-day breakdown to help you visualize your journey:

Itinerary Description

Day 1: Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) to Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,671 m/8,763 ft)

Your adventure begins upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). After clearing customs and meeting your trekking team, you'll transfer to the Rongai Gate, the starting point of your climb. Following registration formalities, you'll commence your trek through picturesque farmlands and pine forests. This initial stage offers a gentle introduction to the mountain environment. The hike is relatively easy and takes you to Simba Camp, your first campsite. Here, you'll enjoy a well-deserved dinner and overnight rest, allowing your body to begin acclimatizing.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Cave (3,600 m/11,814 ft)

After breakfast, you'll leave Simba Camp and continue your ascent. The trail gradually steepens as you enter the moorland zone, characterized by low-lying vegetation and stunning views. You'll traverse through this landscape, enjoying the unique flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro. Today's destination is Kikelewa Cave, a scenic spot offering shelter and remarkable views. Another delicious dinner will be prepared, and you'll spend the night at Kikelewa Cave, further aiding your acclimatization.

Day 3: Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m/14,206 ft)

This day involves a shorter but steeper hike towards Mawenzi Tarn Camp. You'll ascend through a more rugged landscape, potentially encountering scree slopes. The reward for your efforts is the breathtaking Mawenzi Tarn, a beautiful lake nestled beneath the towering peaks of Mawenzi. Set up camp near the tarn and enjoy the stunning surroundings. This is an excellent opportunity to explore the area and acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Saddle Hut (4,703 m/15,430 ft)

Today you'll traverse across the lunar-like landscape of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This section can be challenging due to the altitude and exposed terrain. The hike takes you to Saddle Hut, a comfortable and well-equipped base camp strategically located for your summit attempt. You'll spend the afternoon resting and acclimatizing, preparing yourself for the final push.

Day 5: Saddle Hut to Summit (Uhuru Peak) to Horombo Hut (3,720 m/12,200 ft)

This is summit day! A very early start (around midnight) will be necessary to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, in time for sunrise. The ascent is challenging, traversing steep scree slopes. Your guides will provide support and encouragement throughout. Reaching the summit is an unforgettable experience. After taking photos and celebrating your achievement, you'll descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved night's sleep.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to KIA

After breakfast at Horombo Hut, you'll descend through the moorland and forest zones, retracing your steps towards Marangu Gate. From Marangu Gate, you will be transferred back to KIA for your departure, filled with unforgettable memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
